"My name is Kesete. In 2015 I had to flee my country Eritrea. At that time, I had 4 children, & my wife was pregnant with my youngest son.

3 months after my arrival in Belgium, I got refugee status. After that, my family had 12 months to apply for their family reunion visa at the Belgian embassy in Ethiopia. On their attempt [to leave the country], they got arrested, and... while in prison, the deadline for them to apply for their visa passed.

After 12 months, there are a lot of conditions for family reunification, such as having a permanent working contract, 12 months of pay slips, & a house that is big enough for your family. Needless to say, this was extremely difficult because I was still learning Dutch, [but] I managed to rent a house... and start working cleaning houses.

My family received their visa in March 2021. For me, it was impossible to buy plane tickets for my family. Because of COVID, my working hours were reduced & with the little money I make, I've been supporting my family in Ethiopia, paying for the DNA tests needed for their visa, & paying rent for my house in Belgium.

I am so grateful to Miles4Migrants for reuniting my family after 6 years. I saw my youngest son for the first time this week, & he is a big 6-year-old boy now. It hurt so much to be separated for so many years, but now we can finally be happy & start our lives in Belgium. I will never forget your help."

A family together again

We accept pledges from a variety of frequent flyer and rewards programs. Unfortunately, we cannot pool miles from multiple donors when booking flights. Therefor, we have a minimum amount for most programs to ensure the miles will cover the cost of at least a single ticket.

1. Pledge your airline miles, credit card points, or cash.

Miles4Migrants works with 45+ nonprofit partners to identify individuals who have legal approval to travel but cannot afford the cost of a plane ticket. We’ll contact you as soon as we have an individual or family who is in need of your pledged miles.

2. Let Miles4Migrants find a match for your pledge.

We’ll work with you to book a flight. Our in-house Booking Team consists of experts in reward travel and flight reservations. They can book the flight for you or help you book the flight yourself. Either way, you’ve just helped someone be on their way to reaching a safe home!

3. Book a flight to help someone reach home.

Miles4Migrants uses frequent flyer miles, credit card points, and cash to help people impacted by war, persecution, or disaster start a new beginning in a new home. We partner with other nonprofits to identify refugees, asylum-seekers, and their immediate family members who have legal approval to travel but cannot afford airfare.

Why is providing flights to refugees so impactful?

Families are reunited

Refugees arrive free of debt

As of June 2020, UNHCR estimates that over 79.5 million people have been forcibly displaced worldwide, with over 26 million classified as refugees forced to leave their home countries. Families and loved ones may be torn apart due to war, persecution, and/or disaster. Often, families must make the agonizing decision to have one member leave behind their loved ones to seek asylum or refugee status for the whole family in a safe new country. This process can take several years, during which families may be living continents apart. The Miles4Migrants community is helping bring these families back together.

Depending on the route, airfare can often cost hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars per family member– well above what most refugee families can afford. Families can sometimes obtain a loan for the flight cost from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), but these loans come with additional fees. Families arrive to their new homes owing monthly payments on this debt only six months from when they arrive, right when they need every penny to restart their lives in a new country. The average loan amount is $1,100 per person. Miles4Migrants donors help alleviate this burden.

Sami (right) interpreted for the American military in Afghanistan. He was able to relocate to Seattle on an SIV after being a victim of violent attacks.

Our World Refugee Day sponsor, The Points Guy, is graciously helping cover the additional costs of tickets booked with miles from this campaign. While frequent flyer miles and credit card points cover most airfare expenses, there are also added fees that miles or points do not cover, such as taxes, departure and arrival fees, and fuel surcharges. Our average cost of taxes and fees per flight booked is $33.80 per person. Because of The Points Guy's sponsorship, your donation goes further.
